Oxford dictionary of national biography WWW site, viewed Aug. 22, 2014 (Lytton, Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer (formerly Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer), first Baron Lytton; b. May 25, 1803, London; d. Jan. 18, 1873, Torquay; writer and politician. His daunting array of names is a source of frequent confusion. His forenames were Edward George Earle Lytton (the last of them being his mother's maiden name). For the first forty years of his life his surname was Bulwer though out of respect for his mother's family, to whose estates he was heir, he often styled himself Edward Lytton Bulwer. When his mother died in 1843 and he came into his inheritance, he changed his surname by royal licence to Bulwer Lytton (without a hyphen, though others sometimes supplied one), thus becoming Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer Lytton. He was created Baron Lytton of Knebworth in 1866. "My novel" (1853) and What will he do with it? (1859), were billed as "by Pisistratus Caxton" [a character in his novel The Caxtons (1849)])
